Size-dependency of the transverse-tensile failure behavior for triaxially braided composites

چکیده

Coupon specimens of triaxially braided composites suffer significant out-of-plane tension–torsion coupled deformation along the free edges, known as free-edge effect, under uniaxial tensile/compressive loading. The presence effect causes variations in measured stiffness and strength properties with specimen size. In this study, size-dependent failure behavior a single-layer composite transverse tension load is investigated. Experiments are conducted to characterize stress–strain response pattern straight-sided coupon various widths. Digital image correlation used monitor free-edge-effect–induced tension-torsion deformation. An improved meso-scale finite element model developed enable simulation fiber bundle pull-out by introducing fully covered tow-to-tow interface plastic pure matrix zone. captures response, induced premature ultimate phenomena composite. experimental numerical results identify transition mechanism from one that dominated shear width increased. reveal progressive behavior, they aid identifying major stress components contributing failure. conclusions provide useful insights for structural design architecture optimization composites.

Statistical Analysis of the Progressive Failure Behavior for Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Composites under Tensile Loading

An analytical approach with the help of numerical simulations based on the equivalent constraint model (ECM) was proposed to investigate the progressive failure behavior of symmetric fiber-reinforced composite laminates damaged by transverse ply cracking. A fracture criterion was developed to describe the initiation and propagation of the transverse ply cracking. This work was also concerned wi...

Effect of Strain Rate on the Tensile Failure of Glass-fibre Braided Tubes

Tensile tests have been performed at up to five different displacement rates, from about lmm/s to over 20,000mm/s, on braided glass-fibre tubes of both square and circular cross-section and the corresponding force-displacement curves have been derived. In general both the maximum tensile force and the displacement at failure increase with increasing loading rate, implying a greater energy absor...
